This step-by-step tutorial details the full installation process of a CarPlay and Android Auto interface module on an Audi A5 B8 equipped with the factory MMI system. The procedure preserves all original vehicle functions while adding modern smartphone integration features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and screen mirroring.
1. Overview of the Kit Components
Before starting, verify that your kit includes the following components:
- The main interface module (metal control box with multiple ports)
- A main wiring harness with Quadlock connectors
- A gateway transfer harness
- An RCA + USB harness (optional for wired connection)
- LVDS video cables
Important:
The DIP switch configuration must match your screen size and resolution. Refer to the included chart in the user manual for more info.
2. Preparation and Safety
- Turn off the ignition and remove the key
- Disconnect the battery if preferred (recommended for safety) (Put your shifter in S Mode first)
- Protect trim surfaces using a cloth to avoid scratches
3. Glove Box Removal
To access the installation area:
- Remove five 8mm screws:
- 1 screw on the side of the dashboard (remove the cover first with a plastic lever)
- 3 screws inside the upper glove box
- 2 screws underneath the glove box
- Carefully lower and remove the glove box
This exposes a large workspace—Audi provides excellent access, making this installation relatively straightforward.
4. Removing the MMI Head Unit
- Shift the gear selector into Sport mode (for clearance)
- Insert the radio removal keys (flat side facing outward)
- Pull the MMI head unit out gently
- Using a plastic lever tool, gently pull the panel—it unclips easily
5. Disconnecting the Factory Connections
Quadlock Connector:
- Use a flathead screwdriver to lift the locking lever
- Disconnect the main Quadlock plug
- Plug the factory Quadlock connector into the new harness (lock it by lowering the lever)
- Connect the new harness back into the MMI head unit
LVDS Cable (Video Signal):
- Locate the LVDS port (usually the pink connector)
- Press the clip and remove the cable
- Connect the new cable between the OEM radio unit and our module
This creates a video bypass loop, allowing the module to inject CarPlay/Android Auto into your original multimedia system.
7. Gateway Harness Installation
- Locate the red connector
- Disconnect it by pressing the clip
- Insert it into the matching black connector
- Plug the remaining connector back into the original slot
This enables communication between the module and the vehicle system.
8. Optional USB & RCA Routing
If you want to have the option of using wired CarPlay/Android Auto:
- Route the USB cable under the glove box or center console
- Ensure easy access for the user
If not needed, you can skip this step since wireless connectivity is supported.
9. Cable Management
- Route all cables through the rear cavity behind the MMI unit
- Group wires using electrical tape
- Ensure no cables obstruct the head unit reinsertion
Proper cable management is essential for a clean and reliable installation.
10. Connecting the Module
Connect all components to the module:
- Quadlock harness
- LVDS cable
- Gateway harness
- Bolt-in the Wi-Fi antenna
Each connector is uniquely shaped, preventing incorrect installation.
11. Initial System Test
Before reassembly:
- Turn on ignition
- Press and hold the MEDIA button for 3 seconds
- Switch between:
- Factory MMI interface
- CarPlay / Android Auto interface
Confirm that:
- Display switches correctly
- System responds smoothly
12. Reassembly
Once testing is successful:
- Slide the MMI head unit back into place
- Remove the extraction keys
- Reinstall the climate control panel
- Secure the module behind the glove box
- Reinstall the glove box using the original screws
13. Pairing Your Smartphone
For Android Auto:
- Enable Bluetooth on your phone
- Connect to the device (typically named “CAR-XXXX”)
- Accept pairing request
- Android Auto launches automatically
For Apple CarPlay:
- Follow the same Bluetooth pairing process
- CarPlay will initialize automatically
