Button layout may differ slightly depending on whether your vehicle has the basic audio controls or the extended multifunction package with telephone and voice input. How W211 Steering Wheel Buttons Fail

Mercedes used a rubberised overmould on the W211's steering wheel button caps that gave them a soft, dampened press feel when new. The problem is that this rubber layer was never formulated to survive 20 years of contact.

The failure happens in stages. First, the matte texture turns slick and the buttons start reflecting light where they should absorb it. Then the printed symbols lose contrast — the volume arrows, phone icons, and menu markers blur into the button surface until they are barely legible. Eventually, the rubber compound itself gets tacky, attracting dust and leaving residue on fingertips after every press.

On a car with leather, wood, and chrome everywhere else, corroded button surfaces on the steering wheel stand out as the cheapest-looking thing the driver touches.

What This Kit Replaces

The replacement covers the button caps, rocker pads, and cosmetic surrounds on both sides of the steering wheel.

The PCB boards, contact domes, and ribbon cables behind the buttons are left completely in place. These electronic components are independent of the cosmetic layer and almost never fail on the W211 — the problem is the surface, not the switch.

If every button still registers when pressed but the surfaces have degraded visually, this kit is the correct repair. A button that produces no response at all when pressed firmly may have a failed contact dome underneath, which is a separate issue from surface wear.

Installation

The W211 button caps mount onto the switch module housing with small locking tabs along their edges.

Using a thin plastic pry tool, release each tab by sliding the tool between the cap edge and the module housing. Lift the old cap away from the contact dome beneath. Take care not to push the dome out of its seat — it should remain untouched on the board.

Align the new cap over the same position, match the tabs to the housing slots, and press down until a firm click confirms engagement.

No airbag removal required. No steering wheel disassembly. No battery disconnection needed.

Both sides of the steering wheel can be completed in 15 to 20 minutes.
