What Goes Wrong With Škoda Steering Wheel Buttons

Škoda fits its steering wheels with a painted matte finish on the multifunction button caps — a finish that looks sharp and precise when the car leaves the factory. The problem is that it was not engineered for the number of presses it actually receives over the life of the vehicle.

Every drive involves repeated contact across volume, track skip, cruise control, and menu navigation. Over time, the matte paint wears through to the shiny base plastic underneath. The printed symbols fade and disappear. Buttons that once clicked cleanly start to feel flat or imprecise.

This is not something a cleaning product or interior detailer can fix. Paint wear and faded icons are permanent — the only solution is replacing the button caps themselves.

What This Kit Replaces

The kit covers the multifunction button caps and rocker switches on both sides of the steering wheel.

The electronic switch contacts and wiring behind the buttons are not touched. Nothing is disconnected, no modules are removed, and no VCDS or OBD coding is required.

This is the correct repair when your buttons still register every press but the surface is visibly worn. If a button has stopped functioning entirely, the underlying contact membrane may need attention — that is a separate issue from surface wear.

Installation

The factory button caps clip onto the switch actuators using small plastic retention tabs.

Use a thin plastic pry tool or a flat-head screwdriver wrapped in tape to gently release each cap from its housing. The old cap lifts clear of the switch contact below.

Place the new cap over the actuator, align the tabs, and press firmly until it snaps into place.

No airbag removal, no steering wheel disassembly, and no special tools required.

The full swap takes around 10 to 15 minutes.
