Why Porsche Steering Wheel Buttons Deteriorate

Porsche uses a soft-touch coating on its steering wheel controls to give them a premium feel when new. The trade-off is durability.

The coating breaks down with exposure to hand oils, sunscreen, and temperature cycles — particularly in warmer climates. Once the surface starts to degrade, the buttons become tacky to the touch, visually patchy, and increasingly unpleasant to use.

This is a material issue, not a usage problem, and it affects well-maintained vehicles just as much as high-mileage ones.

What This Kit Replaces

The replacement covers the button caps and surrounds on both sides of the steering wheel.

The underlying switch membranes and electrical contacts remain in place and are not affected.

Installation

The original button caps are held in place by small retention clips.

Using a thin plastic pry tool, gently release each cap from the front side and lift it away from the switch membrane.

Position the replacement cap over the same location, align the clips, and press firmly until it snaps into place.

No disassembly of the steering wheel or airbag removal is required.

The full swap takes around 15 minutes.
