Why the W218 Sunroof Stops Working

The CLS's long, low roofline creates a panoramic glass surface that spans nearly the full length of the cabin — and the track that carries it is correspondingly long. The plastic rail guides that keep the glass aligned over that full travel span are exposed to cumulative stress across every cycle. As the vehicle ages, temperature cycling causes the plastic to harden and crack. A single failed guide is enough to cause the glass to move unevenly, bind, or stop — placing the motor under load it was not built for.
