How the W213 Touchpad Fails

The touchpad surface on the W213 is a smooth, coated panel designed to register precise finger movement across its entire area. The coating needs to be uniform for the capacitive sensor beneath to read inputs accurately.

Years of fingertip friction, nail contact, hand cream residue, and ring scratches degrade that surface progressively. The center of the pad wears fastest because most gestures originate from the same spot. As the coating thins unevenly, the touchpad starts misreading swipes, ignoring handwriting strokes, and registering phantom inputs at random.

Cleaning the surface helps temporarily, but once the factory coating is physically worn through, no amount of wiping will restore consistent tracking. The surface itself needs to be replaced.
