Steering Wheel Control Buttons
Direct replacements for the OEM audio, phone, and cruise control buttons on the MINI multifunction steering wheel. These restore clean tactile feedback and reliable operation of all onboard controls — volume, track selection, phone answer and end call, cruise control SET and RES, and onboard computer navigation — without removing your hands from the wheel.
The MINI steering wheel sees exceptional daily wear given the driving-focused, urban character of the car. Surface degradation, fading icons, and sticky or unresponsive buttons are common across both the R-series and F-series generations. This kit resolves all of that in a single installation, using components engineered to match the original factory dimensions, spacing, and feel.
DIY Tutorial
What you'll need: T20 Torx screwdriver, thin flat tool or pin (for the airbag spring clips), small tray or cup for screws.
1. Safety first. Disconnect your battery before touching anything on the steering wheel. Wait at least 1 minute after disconnecting to allow the airbag system to fully discharge. Never skip this step.
2. Release the airbag. On the back of the steering wheel, locate the two access holes — typically positioned at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions on the reverse side. Insert your thin flat tool into each hole and push the spring clip inward to release the airbag on each side. Once both clips are released, the airbag module lifts away from the wheel.
3. Unplug and set the airbag aside. Press the release tab on the airbag wiring connector and unplug it carefully. Set the airbag face-up on a flat, stable surface away from your work area. Never lay it face-down or leave it somewhere it could fall.
4. Access the button panels. With the airbag removed, you have clear access to the steering wheel spoke panels that house the multifunction buttons. Use your T20 Torx to remove the screws securing each panel — typically one or two per side depending on your specific model and trim.
5. Remove the button assembly. Pull each panel clear of the spoke and flip it over. The button assembly is held by small clips or additional screws. Release these and the button cluster will come free. Disconnect the wiring connector attached to the assembly and note its orientation before unplugging.
6. Swap the buttons. Using a small flat tool, press each individual button from behind until it unclips from the housing. Install the new replacement buttons by pressing them firmly into position until each one clicks securely into place.
7. Reassemble in reverse order. Reconnect the wiring connector to the button assembly, reinstall the assembly into the panel, reattach the panel to the spoke with its screws, then reconnect the airbag wiring and press the airbag module back into position until it clicks firmly on both sides.
8. Reconnect and test. Plug the battery back in. Turn the ignition to the ON position and test each steering wheel button to confirm all functions — audio, phone, cruise control, and onboard computer — respond correctly. If any button does not register, check that the wiring connector is fully seated before investigating further.
