When the Interior Centrepiece Shows Its Age

The W219's cabin was designed to make an impression. Sweeping dashboard lines, analogue clock, deeply contoured seats — and right at the centre of the driver's interaction with the car, a pair of button clusters that have spent nearly 20 years absorbing thumb pressure, skin oils, and temperature extremes.

The rubberised finish Mercedes used on these controls breaks down chemically over time. The surface shifts from matte to glossy, the printed symbols dissolve into the background, and eventually the coating becomes tacky enough to leave marks on anything it contacts.

On a car that was built to look exceptional from the driver's seat, worn steering wheel buttons are one of the first things that undermine the experience.

What the Kit Covers

The replacement includes new button caps, rocker switch covers, and bezel trims for both steering wheel spokes.

The switch PCBs, dome actuators, and flat-flex connectors underneath remain in situ and fully operational. The failure on the W219 is exclusively a surface material issue — the electronics beneath are durable and rarely need attention.

Installation

The original caps attach to the button module via small integrated clips that release with minimal leverage.

Use a thin non-marring pry tool to ease each cap away from the housing. The dome actuator beneath should stay in its recess on the board — avoid pressing it inward during removal.

Seat the new cap over the actuator, engage the clips, and press down until a positive click confirms the cap is locked.

No airbag intervention. No wheel removal. No scan tool or coding necessary.

Full replacement on both sides takes around 15 minutes.
