The W204 was produced across a seven-year run and sold in enormous numbers — which means a large proportion of these cars are now well into their second or third ownership cycle with high accumulated mileage. The overhead console on the W204 is centrally positioned and perfectly placed for the driver to reach without shifting their posture, encouraging habitual, almost automatic use of the sunroof.

The surface coating wears down from the combination of repeated fingertip pressure and the heat and UV exposure that accumulates over years of use in a sun-warmed interior. The printed icon fades first, then the button loses its defined travel and resistance, giving a vague, undefined feel every time it is pressed. On a car where the overhead panel is otherwise intact, a single degraded button stands out.
