The E-Class is used differently from a compact car — longer individual journeys, more time at motorway speeds, more instances where the driver opens the roof for sustained ventilation rather than a brief tilt. The overhead console button on the W212 and W207 is pressed with intention and held to run the roof panel to its full-open position, placing more mechanical stress on the button surface with each use.

Over years of this, the surface coating degrades under the dual effect of fingertip wear and UV exposure through the very glass panel the button controls. The icon becomes illegible, the button loses its clean travel feel, and what was a precise, high-quality control in a premium interior becomes an obvious exception to the car's build quality.
