In the compact cabin, the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button sits close to the driver's hand at all times — the centre console is narrow and the layout puts every control within immediate reach. That proximity means the button is touched, brushed against, and pressed more than in larger vehicles where the console is further away. Over several years, the factory button surface shows exactly that level of contact.

Compact Roadster — High Contact, Compact Console

In the R172, the interior is stripped to essentials — everything is within reach and everything is touched. The KEYLESS-GO button is no exception. The compact console layout means it catches incidental contact more often than in a saloon, and the roadster use profile — frequent short drives, hood-down touring, driver-only use — puts high press counts on a vehicle that may not show high mileage on the odometer.

The button face typically develops a worn patch at the centre contact point, and the chrome bezel picks up circumferential scratches from ring and cufflink contact. Standard interior cleaning has no effect on this type of wear. The correct fix is a direct replacement.

Installation

Disconnect the plug at the rear of the button, release the retention mechanism, and remove the worn unit. Fit the replacement, reconnect the plug, and test. The process takes 10 to 15 minutes and does not require console panel removal.
