The Coating Problem on Porsche Steering Wheels

Porsche applies a soft-touch finish to its steering wheel buttons across the entire lineup. While it delivers a refined tactile feel when new, this coating is inherently fragile.

Repeated contact with skin oils, hand creams, and UV exposure through the windshield causes the surface to break down progressively. The result is a glossy, sticky residue that clings to fingertips and makes every interaction with the controls feel cheap.

Because this is a coating degradation issue rather than a mechanical failure, it cannot be resolved through cleaning or detailing products. The only permanent fix is replacing the affected button caps themselves.

Slide a thin plastic trim tool under the edge of the cap and apply gentle outward pressure until the clip releases. Lift the old cap away from the switch membrane beneath.

Align the new replacement cap over the mounting point and press evenly until all clips engage.
