The overhead console buttons on the W221 are operated by reaching up and pressing with a fingertip, often without looking. That combination of blind contact and upward force puts a different kind of stress on the button surface compared to dashboard or steering wheel controls.

The pad coating wears down from repeated fingernail contact and directional friction as the button is slid forward to tilt or held back to close. The icon marking erodes until it is no longer visible, and the button itself develops a polished, slippery feel that makes it harder to locate by touch in a dimly lit cabin.
