DIY-Install

The F01 features more buttons per cabin than most BMWs — a consequence of its full luxury specification. Each one uses the same soft-touch rubber coating that degrades with age, heat, and accumulated hand contact. Once the coating breaks down it becomes sticky, leaves residue, and eventually peels. On a flagship sedan where occupants sit in close proximity to these controls, a single failed button is impossible to ignore.

Despite the F01's complexity elsewhere, replacing these buttons is straightforward — no door card removal, no harness work, no coding required.

Tools Needed

- Plastic trim removal tool

- No other tools required

Step 1 – Locate the Button

Identify which button you are replacing:

- Lock / Unlock buttons — located on the door panel switch cluster

- Hazard warning button — located on the center console, marked with a red triangle symbol

Step 2 – Remove the Old Button

Insert a plastic trim tool at the edge of the button or switch surround.

Apply gentle lever pressure at multiple points to release the retaining clips evenly.

Pull the button unit forward — F01 buttons are held by clips only, with no screws.

Press the release tab on the wiring connector and pull straight back to unplug.

Step 3 – Install the New Button

Connect the wiring connector to the back of the new button until it clicks securely.

Align the unit with its housing recess.

Press firmly and evenly around the surround until every clip engages and the button sits perfectly flush.
