DIY-Install

The lock/unlock and hazard warning buttons on the BMW F10 use a soft-touch rubber coating that degrades with age and heat exposure. Once the coating begins to break down, it becomes tacky, transfers residue to your fingers, and eventually peels — leaving bare, discolored plastic underneath. The button legends (symbols) also fade and wear from repeated contact.

Replacing these buttons is one of the simplest interior jobs on the F10 — no door cards, no wiring harness removal, no coding required.

Tools Needed

- Plastic trim removal tool

- No other tools required

Step 1 – Locate the Button

Identify which button you are replacing:

- Lock / Unlock buttons — located on the door panel, integrated into the armrest or switch cluster

- Hazard warning button — located on the center console or dashboard, marked with a red triangle symbol

Step 2 – Remove the Old Button

Insert a plastic trim tool carefully at the edge of the button or switch surround.

Apply gentle lever pressure to release the retaining clips.

Pull the button unit forward — most F10 buttons are held by clips only, with no screws.

Disconnect the wiring connector from the back of the unit by pressing the release tab and pulling straight out.

Step 3 – Install the New Button

Connect the wiring connector to the back of the new button unit until it clicks.

Align the button with its housing opening.

Press firmly until all clips engage and the button sits flush with the surrounding trim.
