Surface Degradation on the W209

The W209 CLK is now 20 years old at minimum, and the rubber-based coating on its steering wheel buttons has been breaking down for most of that time.

The process is gradual enough that many owners stop noticing it. The matte surface turns shiny first. Then the icon markings lose definition. Then the rubber layer softens and becomes adhesive, collecting dust particles and transferring residue onto the driver's thumbs with every press.

On the CLK, where the interior was built around leather, aluminium, and chrome, worn steering wheel buttons create a visible quality gap that detracts from the rest of the cabin. This kit closes that gap.

Scope of Replacement

The kit replaces the cosmetic button caps and rocker pad covers on the left and right steering wheel spokes.

All underlying electronics — the printed circuit board, tactile switch domes, and connector ribbons — stay wired and mounted. These components are mechanically robust on the W209 and are virtually never the source of the problem.

Installation

The factory button caps are attached to the module housing by snap-fit retention clips.

Work a thin plastic pry tool between the cap and the housing to disengage each clip. Remove the old cap carefully, leaving the dome switch seated on the circuit board.

Position the replacement cap, line up the clips with their corresponding slots, and press down firmly until fully engaged.

No airbag disconnection. No steering wheel removal. No electrical intervention of any kind.

Both sides are completed in approximately 15 minutes.
