The G-Class Outlasts Its Own Buttons

The W463 is a vehicle that routinely stays on the road for decades. The body, drivetrain, and chassis are built for it. The steering wheel button surfaces are not.

Mercedes applied the same rubberised coating to the G-Class controls as it did across its sedan and coupe lineup. That coating degrades through contact with hand oils, UV exposure, and cabin heat cycles. On a G-Class that has seen 15 to 20 years of ownership, the buttons are typically glossy, sticky to the touch, and the printed icons have worn to the point of illegibility.

The mechanical switches underneath remain functional. The cosmetic layer on top does not.

What Gets Replaced

This kit targets the outer button caps, rocker surfaces, and trim frames mounted on the steering wheel spokes.

The switch circuit boards, dome contacts, and wiring remain installed and untouched throughout the process. The electronics are not the problem on the W463 — the degraded surface finish is.

Installation

Each button cap clips onto the switch housing with small plastic retention tabs.

Slide a thin pry tool beneath the cap edge, release the tab, and lift the old cap away from the dome contact below. Keep the dome seated in its position on the board.

Place the new cap over the switch point, align the tabs, and press until it clicks firmly into place.

No airbag removal. No steering wheel disassembly. No coding or diagnostics.

The complete swap takes 15 to 20 minutes.
