Open-Air Exposure Accelerates the Problem

Every R230 shares the same rubberised button coating used across Mercedes models of this era. But the SL adds a factor the sedans and coupes do not: direct, sustained UV exposure with the roof down.

The soft-touch finish on the steering wheel buttons was already vulnerable to skin contact, heat cycling, and cabin temperature swings. Add hundreds of hours of unfiltered sunlight hitting the controls directly and the degradation accelerates significantly. The rubber layer hardens in some areas and turns adhesive in others, creating an uneven, patchy surface that feels wrong under the thumb and looks worse under any light.

SL owners who garage their cars and rarely drop the top are not immune — they just reach the same endpoint a few years later than those who drive open regularly.

What Gets Replaced

The kit covers the button caps, rocker pads, and cosmetic trim surrounds on both steering wheel spokes.

The circuit boards, dome switch contacts, and ribbon connectors beneath remain fully installed and functional. On the R230, the electronics behind these buttons are robust — the issue is entirely the cosmetic surface layer that sits on top of them.

If buttons still respond to every press but look and feel degraded, this is the correct fix.

Installation

Each factory button cap is secured to the switch module by small perimeter clips.

Insert a thin plastic pry tool along the cap edge, release the clip, and carefully lift the old cap away. Leave the dome contact undisturbed in its seat on the board.

Position the new cap, align the clips to the housing, and press down until you feel a firm click.

No airbag removal. No steering wheel disassembly. No battery disconnection or diagnostic tools required.

Both sides of the wheel are completed in approximately 15 minutes.
