DIY-Install

The F12 Convertible's open-top design means the interior takes more direct sun and heat than a fixed-roof car — and the soft-touch coating on buttons is particularly vulnerable to this. UV exposure accelerates the breakdown of the rubber coating, turning it tacky before it eventually peels. The button legends fade from repeated contact. On a car at the 6 Series price point, a single degraded button draws the eye immediately.

The replacement process is the same as on any F-series BMW — no door cards, no wiring work, no coding session at the dealer.

Tools Needed

- Plastic trim removal tool

- No other tools required

Step 1 – Locate the Button

Identify which button you are replacing:

- Lock / Unlock buttons — located on the door panel armrest or switch cluster

- Hazard warning button — located on the center console, marked with a red triangle symbol

Step 2 – Remove the Old Button

Insert a plastic trim tool at the edge of the button or switch surround.

Apply gentle lever pressure at several points to release the retaining clips.

Pull the button unit forward — F12 buttons are secured by clips only, no screws.

Press the release tab on the wiring connector and pull straight out to unplug.

Step 3 – Install the New Button

Plug the wiring connector into the back of the new button until it clicks into place.

Align the button with its housing recess.

Press evenly around the surround until all clips seat and the button sits flush.
