Audi A5 B8 Reliability Guide: Which Models To Buy And Avoid?

Audi A5 B8 Reliability Guide: Which Models To Buy And Avoid?

Buying Guide: Audi A5 & S5 B8 (2008–2016) Reliability and Common Issues

The Audi A5 B8, produced from 2008 to 2016, combines timeless design, a refined interior, and engaging driving dynamics. Available as a coupé, cabriolet, or Sportback, it shares its platform with the A4 B8 — meaning both strengths and weaknesses are similar.

The lineup also includes the S5, powered by a V6 3.0 TFSI (after 2009) or a 4.2L V8 in early coupés, delivering serious performance. However, not all engines are created equal in terms of reliability. This guide covers what to look for before buying a used Audi A5 or S5 B8, from engine issues to maintenance and known wear points.

What Makes the A5 B8 Appealing

  • Elegant and timeless design, still modern today

  • Excellent build quality and materials

  • Comfortable yet dynamic driving behavior

  • Available in AWD quattro or efficient FWD variants

  • Wide range of trims and engines

Engine Reliability Overview

1.8 TFSI (Europe mainly, limited in North America)

Known for oil consumption issues due to piston ring wear on early engines (before 2012). Owners often report up to 1L of oil per 1,000 km.
Fix: Audi revised piston designs after 2012 — post-facelift engines are safer bets.

2.0 TFSI (EA888 Gen 1 & Gen 2)

Found in many A5s in the US. Offers great performance and efficiency but has several issues:

  • Oil consumption (pre-2012 models): Same piston/segment issue as the 1.8.

  • Timing chain tensioner failure: Can cause catastrophic engine damage if ignored. Listen for rattles at cold start.

  • Water pump leaks and PCV valve failures are also common.
Recommended: Look for 2013+ models with the updated Gen 2 EA888 engine.

3.2 FSI V6 (2008–2010)

Naturally aspirated and smooth, but prone to:

  • Carbon buildup on intake valves due to direct injection

  • Timing chain tensioner noise

  • High maintenance costs compared to 2.0 TFSI
Still, it’s one of the more reliable options if well maintained.

3.0 TFSI V6 (S5, 2010–2016)

A strong and generally reliable engine, but not flawless:

  • Water pump and thermostat failures are very common.

  • Chain tensioners can get noisy over time.

  • Occasional oil leaks from the rear main seal or valve covers.
Overall, one of the best engines in the lineup — powerful, smooth, and durable if serviced properly.

4.2 FSI V8 (S5 coupé 2008–2010 only)

The last naturally aspirated V8 in an S5. Reliable and emotional but has its quirks:

  • Carbon buildup on valves (periodic walnut blasting required).

  • Oil consumption on higher-mileage cars.

  • Timing chain noise from worn tensioners.
A gem for enthusiasts who don’t mind higher running costs.

Other Common Reliability Issues

  • Multitronic (CVT) gearbox: Avoid if possible. Known for jerky behavior and premature wear.

  • S tronic (DSG): Reliable if serviced every 60,000 miles — skipping oil changes shortens its life.

  • Power steering leaks: Especially on early models.

  • Suspension wear: Front control arms and bushings wear early; listen for clunks or rattles.

  • Electronics: MMI failures, faulty sensors (ABS, parking, or airbag), and occasional window regulator issues.

  • Water pump and thermostat leaks: A recurring problem across nearly all engines.

What to Check Before Buying

  • Cold start noise → listen for timing chain rattle (especially 2.0 TFSI and 3.0 TFSI).

  • Oil level and consumption → check dipstick before and after a 20–30 min test drive.

  • MMI and infotainment → ensure all functions (radio, Bluetooth, navigation) work correctly.

  • Transmission → shifts must be smooth; avoid any hesitation or clunk.

  • Undercarriage → look for leaks or uneven tire wear (alignment or suspension issues).

Recommended Versions

  • Best value daily driver: A5 2.0 TFSI (2013+ Gen 2 engine, quattro)

  • Most reliable performance model: S5 3.0 TFSI (2013–2016)

  • Collector choice: Early S5 4.2 V8 coupé

  • Avoid: Early 2.0 TFSI (2008–2011) and any A5 with Multitronic transmission
