DIY Tutorial
What you'll need: Phillips head screwdriver, trim removal pry tool, small tray or cup for screws.
1. Safety first. Disconnect your battery before touching anything on the steering wheel. Wait at least 5 minutes after disconnecting to allow the airbag system to fully discharge. Never skip this step — the Prius airbag system retains charge briefly after disconnection.
2. Access the back of the steering wheel. Position the steering wheel in its centre position. On the back of the wheel, locate the access slots or trim panels that cover the button assemblies on each spoke. Depending on your trim level, these may be secured with small Phillips screws or plastic clips.
3. Remove the button panel. Using your trim pry tool, carefully release the button panel from its housing. Work slowly around the edges to avoid cracking the surrounding trim. Once the panel is free, you will see the button assembly seated behind it.
4. Disconnect the button connector. Locate the wiring connector attached to the button assembly and press the release tab to unplug it. Note the orientation before disconnecting so reassembly is straightforward.
5. Remove the individual buttons. Using a small flat tool, press each button from behind until it unclips from the housing. Take note of each button's position before removal.
6. Install the new buttons. Press each replacement button into the housing until it clicks firmly into place. Reconnect the wiring connector to the button assembly — you should hear or feel it click securely.
7. Reinstall the button panel. Align the panel with its housing and press it back into position, working around the edges until all clips or screws are secured.
8. Reconnect and test. Plug the battery back in. Turn the ignition to the ON position (without starting the hybrid system) and test each steering wheel button to confirm all functions — audio, phone, cruise control, and MFD navigation — respond correctly. If any button does not register, check the wiring connector is fully seated before reassembling further.
